Amphorae Ageing

The reemergence of a wine holding vessel that dates back 6,000 years ago.

The old world tradition of ageing wine in clay has been making a roaring comeback. From Italy to the US, winemakers are going back in time to offer wines that our pure examples of the terroir and grape they are choosing. Originating in the country Georgia, clay holding vessels have been an old world tradition familiar with the countries that align. Spain, Georgia, Italy, Portugal to name a few all were a norm when they were establishing themselves as wine growers.

What is the difference that comes from ageing in Amphorae? Well lets take away what other vessels do. Oak imparts flavor. These vary based off what oak you use, dill, coconut, vanilla are common in wines we experience like Chardonnay from California, plus the addition of tannins from the wood affect the profile of wines. Oxygen introduced to the wine also adds effects. Stainless Steel on the other hand is oxygen free, not allowing any to enter during the process. Amphorae aging allows some oxygen to reach, delivering texture to the wines, however it does not impart flavors like how oak would.
