Negroni Sbagliato
Sbagliato meaning mistake in Italian, has shown that it deserves to be a mainstay in low ABV drinking culture.
Long before House of Dragon Star Emma D’Arcy viral video of her preferred cocktail of choice, the Negroni Sbagliato was a known cocktail amongst industry veterans. However, it still was somewhat of a newcomer to the regular public. Low ABV drinking culture has risen along with fully non alcoholic alternatives to the beverage consumer. The Aperol Spritz was the star of the show that took over across the USA for a perfect light, refreshing, bubbly drink crushable at all times of the day. This has helped the rise of drinking culture that is becoming more of a norm in the 2020’s, enjoying drinks out with friends without a high intake of alcohol while still having a good time. The Negroni Sbagliato offers a spritz cocktail, that is a bit more sophisticated.
The story of how the Negroni Sbagliato came to inception was an Italian bartender who mistakenly grabbed a bottle of Prosecco instead of gin, to top off a Negroni. This “Negroni” helped reveal the familiar ingredients of Campari (more bitter than Aperol) & Sweet Vermouth. Depending on your Negroni build ratio, the prosecco has helped make the notoriously bitter cocktail more approachable, while still enjoying a minimal but complexed drink. It’s delicious and is a staple in Italian drinking culture.
A Negroni Sbagliato also has riff potential, swapping prosecco for different bubbly alternatives, or can even be utilized with other countries spirits, aperitifs, vermouths & more. A Rosa version using Cocchi Americano Rosa for Sweet Vermouth, a Pet Nat Rose for the Prosecco, & Contratto Bitter for Campari. A White Negroni Sbagliato with Lillet Blanc, Salers & a Cremant d’Alsace. The tools to switch the classic Italian Aperitivo cocktails are plentiful, and offer up a fun way to imbibe on the softer side at gatherings.
